CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:  11TH ANNUAL BROOKLYN BOROUGH PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL

Application Deadline: Friday, February 28, 2025 at 11:59 PM.

We invite you to submit your student performance for this year's performing arts festival to be held at Brooklyn Children's Museum, Brooklyn, NY 11210.

Date of performance on Sunday, June 1, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

N.B. There will be no Tech Rehearsal for this year's Festival

Participating schools will be announced late March, 2025.

ELIGIBILITY
Music, Theater, and Dance* performances from Brooklyn schools in grades K-12.

Dance ensembles MUST perform in dance shoes.

THEME

This year’s theme is Origins.  Origins in the arts explores the foundational moments, stories, or elements that define existence, identity, or culture.

Artists often delve into creation myths, ancestral roots, or the beginnings of life and nature to uncover the essence of humanity and the universe. This theme can be expressed through depictions of natural elements like earth, water, and sky, symbolizing primal forces, or through abstract representations of birth and renewal.

Art addressing origins invites viewers to reflect on their own beginnings, cultural heritage, and connections to a larger continuum. It serves as a bridge between the past and present, questioning and celebrating the narratives that shape our understanding of where we come from and who we are.

For video tutorials on creating virtual musicals and theater productions, and more, Peter Avery, Director of Theater, has made a resource page available HERE.

RECORDING TIPS:

  • If recording using an iPhone or any other smartphone, set up the device in a horizontal (landscape) position. Even if you feel that your full body would fit better in "portrait" (vertical mode), still please do horizontal.
  • Do some test recording.  It’s always good to record yourself practicing and then play it back to hear how you sound.
  • Singers - Make sure your camera isn’t too close.  Capture space above your head as well as all the way down to your stomach.
  • Don’t record too close and don’t record with a bright window or light behind you.  You should be the star!
  • Instrumentalists: Frame yourself and your whole instrument or most of your instrument.
  • You can film with: a cell phone, a webcam, a tablet, a desktop, a laptop, a digital camera, a video camera. Anything you have that you’ll be able to upload to a computer is OK.  Ask a family member for help, if needed.
  • Make sure you look good!  Can we see your face?  Your smile?  Your instrument? Turn on a light behind the camera so your face is well lit.  Make sure your background looks good.  Clean up if you need to!
  • Is the room still quiet?  Turn off any fans or anything else that makes noise.
  • Place the camera (phone or tablet) on a tripod / dresser / table. Please no hand-held filming - video gets wavy or shaky.

The Manhattan Borough Arts Festival is evolving!

Now in its eleventh year, for the first time ever, the MBAF will merge the Visual Arts Exhibit and Performing Arts Showcase into a 2-day Arts Pathways Experience at The SHED. The NYCPS Arts Office defines an "arts pathway" as a series of learning opportunities available to students from Pre K through 12th grade that provides meaningful, rigorous, coherent, and continuous arts education within their district or borough. Our hope is that by revamping the MBAF in order to  highlight Arts Pathways, the experience will:

  • offer school communities a strategic opportunity to present student artistic work to a wide swath of audience members, including potential incoming students.
  • illuminate for and educate parents about potential arts pathway opportunities across school levels and districts within Manhattan.

SO… what does this all mean for you?

WHAT'S NEW?

  • Location - The Shed. The Visual Arts Gallery and Performing Arts spaces are combined!
  • We have space to exhibit a total of 200 student visual art works. This is a nearly 40 % increase in the number of pieces displayed in previous years.
  • There is ample space to showcase larger sized and 3D work.
  • The Exhibit will be up and open to the public from May 21 - early June.
  • All schools will be labeled to draw potential connections between Pre-K, elementary, middle, and high schools by district and across the borough as applicable.
  • Schools who have not applied in the past ten years will be given additional consideration in the adjudication process.
  • There will be two (2) opening night exhibits: One for Pre-K through 6th grade and one for 7th through 12th grade.
  • Additional tickets, as requested, may be made available for the opening receptions.

WHAT STAYS THE SAME?

  • All applications will be adjudicated by a panel of arts administrators, arts teachers and arts partners.
  • Students must attend a school located in Manhattan.
  • All districts 1-6, M75 and M79 will be represented.
  • Each school may submit up to three (3) student applications. Complete this form once for each performance you wish to enter in the competition.
  • All NYS licensed Visual Arts specialists on the school's TO are eligible to submit work.
  • Teachers may submit up to 3 total works from 3 different students. (Do not submit multiple works by the same student.)
  • Please ensure that the artwork you are submitting to the MBAF is not duplicate artwork submitted to PS Art. It will not be accepted.
  • Please do not submit the same students that were submitted in past years.
  • Complete this form once for each artwork you wish to enter.
  • Have JPEG or MOV file(s) ready to upload

Student Artist Statement: Please have students write an artist statement to submit with their artwork.

We are looking for each student’s voice to express, in their own words, what they feel is important for viewers to know about their artwork.  This may include discussing aspects of the process to create it, or their thoughts on the final product. Students may also write about aspects of their arts education experiences that were part of creating the piece.

Suggested guidelines for length:

PreK-1 : One to two sentences to be dictated by students and written down verbatim by an adult.

Grades 2-5 : Two to five sentences to be written by the student.

Grades 6-12: One to two paragraphs written by the student.

Students have the option of recording their artist statement as a video. If selected, this will be shared as a QR code on a card in the exhibit.  If recording video responses, please keep it to around 1 min in length. Please prepare this in advance as you will need to upload it as part of the application.

Teacher Question:

In 3-5 sentences, describe your current arts program. Please include any mission or vision statements you may have. What is one value you wish to pass on to your students during their time in your classroom? Why is this important for them to know?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are pleased to once again offer SEEDS of the League Scholarships from the Art Students League! Students of all ages can take classes at the League free of cost, including materials.

If your student's work is accepted into MBAF and you are a Title 1 school, the artwork will automatically be entered for adjudication for SEEDS of the League scholarships.

  • This year, we are excited to announce the BAF Theme is Connectivity. For more information on this theme click here.

*******************************************************************************************************************

Schools are invited to submit up to THREE high-quality performance pieces for consideration in any TWO categories: Dance, Chorus, Instrumental Music, Theater, or Musical Theater. To increase access and equity to all, ensembles that have not performed in the last two BAFs will be considered first.

A panel of performing arts professionals will jury the selections. In March, schools whose performing arts ensembles are selected will be notified and given further instructions. Due to space and time limitations, it is not possible to guarantee the representation of every school.

Please complete this process for each performance/piece of repertoire you would like to submit (max of 3).
